Fiji immediately conjures up visions of tropical island bliss: white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, lush gardens, palm groves and craggy volcanic peaks. Fiji islands have all this in abundance, and the best resorts know how to make the most of it.
However, it’s the elusive warmth of the Fiji welcome that really has guests reliving their island adventures – and planning a hasty return. Fijians are generous, affable and fiercely proud of their culture. In fact, “Welcome home” is the universal greeting one hears across the island. With more than 300 islands across a pristine swathe of the South Pacific, Fiji also has something for every type of traveller, from tiny private islands to wellness retreats, and big, family-friendly resorts where children are looked after with doting affection. It goes without saying that each stay is surrounded by lush rainforest and aquamarine ocean. For every definition of paradise, Fiji has a resort to suit.
The island nation’s vulnerability to climate change has also led to an increase in eco-tourism and sustainability initiatives. It’s perfect for reconnecting with nature and yourself. If you’re wondering where to stay, we’ve rounded up the best Fiji resorts to make your accommodation dreams come true.

In fact, its Natadola Suite was recently named the best in Fiji at the World Travel Awards for the fifth time. The three-bedroom suite can sleep up to eight people, and offers a private plunge pool, torch-lit courtyard and panoramic views out the bay. While the Natadola Suite is noteworthy, there’s an array of room options catering to a variety of budgets.
Another main perk of this resort stay is its golf course, offering guests the ability to take in some sporting rounds on the grounds.

Any time between the months of May and October is ideal, as it’s outside the island nation’s cyclone season. According to Tourism Fiji, the temperatures at this time of year are pleasant, ranging from 19-28°C with warmer days and cooler evenings. For couples, solo travellers or those who want to avoid the biggest crowds, May and August are typically months outside of school holidays. Beyond that, the best time to visit often comes down to where you stay – both in terms of the island and the resort.
It depends on what type of experience you want, as all of Fiji’s islands have diverse shorelines, landscapes and accommodation offerings. But from a practical perspective, it’s worth keeping in mind that larger islands have more varied climates, which can make choosing which side of the island you stay on a key factor. For example, both Vanua Levu and Viti Levu – where Nadi International Airport is located – typically having wetter, lusher eastern sides and dryer western sides. In comparison, smaller islands, such as those in the Mamanuca archipelago, tend to have more consistent climates.
Another practical factor to consider is travel times. Most flights from Australia land at Nadi International Airport, where you can connect to other islands. The best resorts usually offer transit recommendations or connections that make it easy to get to your chosen destination, but planning ahead for transfers can help make the timing as seamless as possible.
How we select the best resorts for Fiji
The Gourmet Traveller team has stayed at and assessed a wide selection of hotels, resorts, short-term rentals and other accommodation providers, which has helped us develop a set of criteria on what makes a place the “best” for different types of travellers. We regularly assesses a range of resorts available for stays in Fiji and, for our pick of the best resorts, we focus on properties available with our partners and consider the following key factors:
- Location
- Facilities and amenities
- Inclusions
- Rooms
- Other features
- Reviews from guests and/or our editorial team, as well as any relevant awards
To make sure that the properties truly are the best of the best, we also rule out any established places with aggregated guest ratings of less than 7.5/10 on popular booking and review platforms, as well as on Google.
