Leading Australian chef and award-winning cookbook author, Rosheen Kaul, is once again flexing her short-term residency muscles with the opening of Little Rose at Melbourne’s popular pop-up destination, 274 Brunswick Street.
The former Alta Trattoria site (and current host to Sydney’s Ragazzi pop-up) will transform into a neo-bistro from 9 May until 5 July, with operators James Tait and Luke Drum leading the floor and renowned mixologist and bar owner Joe Jones (Romeo Lane, Purple Pit) on drinks duty.

Little Rose will present a more relaxed, “undone version” of Kaul’s most recent pop-up, Bistro Marigold, which she describes as “a more prescriptive dining experience.” Her signature “Chinoiserie” philosophy will still anchor the menu, with whimsical, vibrant dishes that reinterpret Asian cuisine through a European lens.
This might look like buttery puff pastry that’s intended to be layered with sautéed oysters and oyster mushrooms in a classic peppercorn sauce, chilled clams prepared Chaozhou-style with garlic and coriander and brightened with a fragrant vin jaune, and a rotation of sautéed plates — say, mussels in lemongrass butter mopped up with a crusty baguette.

Renowned mixologist Joe Jones is similarly reworking the classics with a rotating cocktail menu featuring Gin and Tonic made with dandelion gin, green apple and celery tonic, alongside the Little Rose Martini with London Dry Gin, chrysanthemum vermouth, fino sherry and a coconut water dilution for added levity.
Melbourne’s Little Rose pop-up runs from 9 May to 5 July and is open Wednesday to Sunday for dinner and weekend lunches. Bookings are now via their website.
