One of my most cherished memories of my travels abroad is sitting on the second story of a charming little cafe, hands full with an espresso and a flaky cannoli, looking out at the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. One of the largest churches in the world, its towering structure paints the city with its white, red and green marble and stylised flowers. It’s just one of many worlds away from home, as is the rest of Florence.

To enjoy the city is to relish in the authentic art, history and cinematic streets. And, of course, to accompany the old-world grandeur is the variety of top stays – from converted palazzos to Tuscan villas.

Places like the The St. Regis Florence, for example, with its soaring ceilings, ornate interiors and signature butler service layered into a 15th-century palace setting overlooking the Arno. Or the Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, offering sprawling private gardens, pools and Michelin-star dining, creating a resort-like experience right in the city.

Below, we’ve curated a guide to Florence’s most exclusive hotels for an elevated Italian escape.

Where to stay in Florence?

Whether you’re after Renaissance palace grandeur or an urban retreat, Florence’s luxury hotel scene is a master of range. For history, we recommend staying in the Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, Collegio alla Querce, and Il Salviatino as the standouts. For a central, walkable base with strong dining and design credentials, Hotel Savoy, Portrait Firenze, Hotel Lungarno, and Helvetia & Bristol are great, while The Hoxton and W Florence cater to a younger, design-forward crowd who desire the city’s vibrant social energy.

How many days in Florence is enough?

It is recommended for a first-time visitor to allow three to four days to fully experience Florence. Personally, I would recommend the latter of the two, allowing for space to wander and hit all the sweet spots – Uffizi, Accademia, Duomo and Ponte Vecchio – as well as a day trip or two to Fiesole or the Chianti countryside.

What is the best month to visit Florence?

The best months to visit Florence are late April, May, September and October, avoiding the sweltering, tourist-packed peak of July and August.
