For a country devoted to endless summer, winter can feel like an invitation we’ve yet to fully accept. Yet as the air sharpens and the days shorten, a different kind of atmosphere beckons — one centred on misty mornings, crackling fires and experiencing destinations at their most evocative.

For Tasmania, winter is when the island shines. Running from May through August, Tasmania’s Off Season celebrates the rituals of the cool season, inviting visitors to experience the island at its most atmospheric.

It’s during the Off Season that Tassie brings its creative spirit to the fore and showcases the best of its vibrant art scene with festivals full of sensory experiences, all while local producers put on a masterclass in seasonal, cold-climate produce.

Tasmania rewards those willing to slow down, try something different and lean into the elements.

Four ways to experience Tasmania’s Off Season

Fire: The element of gathering

Winter brings a sense of gathering, whether it be the natural huddle for warmth, the extra attention paid to connection or the shared love of hearty cuisine. In the Off Season, gathering means fire.

The crackling fires of Tasmania spark a little differently to the mainland. Fireplaces and outdoor firepits become gathering points, from historic pubs and vast vineyards to long-table feasts showcasing the season’s best produce. Fire has the ability to hold people in place. Slow down and warm up with mulled wine and whisky, grazing over meals that stretch into the evening with conversation that lingers long after the final course arrives.

The Off Season sees fires blazing long into the night, the scent of woodsmoke soothing your senses and the warmth of an open fire provide a fireside feast filled with fresh, local seasonal produce

The Off Season sees fires blazing long into the night, the scent of woodsmoke and the warmth of an open fire providing a fitting introduction to Tasmania’s winter dining scene. Where fireside feasts are filled with fresh, locally sourced, seasonal produce, crafted by executive chefs.

Water: The element of awakening

The element of awakening is visceral, physical and aquatic. The island’s relationship with water is at its most invigorating in winter. Discover how to dive deeper, explore wider and edge a little further out of your comfort zone in the Tasmanian Off Season.

No matter if you’re braving the cold ocean waters or taking a moment’s reprieve in a seaside sauna (of which you’ll find several indulgent options), the ocean aura is as unmissable as it is restorative. Offering both activity and enjoyment, once you’re done diving in, enjoy the oceans flavours on your plate by celebrating all things maritime at Bridport’s Tassie Scallop Fiesta.

Earth: The element of nourishing

There’s no denying it; Tasmania’s food and drink reflect the island’s culture — generous, comforting, down-to-earth and a little unexpected. It’s the locals’ close relationship with the landscape that shapes many of the islands winter experiences.

From nourishing the soul — also known as exploring a good drop, of which Tasmania’s cold climate produces many — to getting out among nature. In the Off Season, you won’t be short of earthen experiences. Follow the season through truffle hunts, chocolate tastings and cellar-door tours that showcase Tasmania’s cool-climate terroir. And even get Permission To Trespass, with local distillery, Alchymia.

Air: The element of perspective

There’s a shift in the air. It’s one designed to push the boundaries and create a sense of excitement, bringing with it scents of moss and damp forest air, the tang of salt whipping in over the sea and the crisp cool of winter.

Although you might not be searching for tranquillity, you’re bound to discover it hidden among the mist-blanketed mountains, sparkling in dark skies and drifting quietly around you in nature’s stillness.

Off Season falls over the winter solstice, which is Australia’s shortest day of the year. Because Tasmania is further away from the equator than the Australian mainland, the night stretches even longer. Make the most of the truly Tasmanian experience by celebrating the longest night. Combing all the elements into a celebration of the season. Be guided by starry skies, linger by crackling fires and sip and savour local whiskies, while marvelling at the cosmic wonder before you.
