For the past 39 years in spring, flower lovers, food enthusiasts and curious travellers have made their way to Canberra for Floriade, Australia’s Biggest Celebration of Spring. Each year promises a festival of colour and captivating blooms but this year, there’s something else to whet the appetite.
Floriade’s 2026 theme, Feast of Flowers, offers a harvest like no other. Inspired by the seasonal ritual of gathering, cooking and sharing a meal, garden bed designs across Commonwealth Park will echo the abundance of the season, with florals styled to reflect the colours and textures of fresh produce and the food moments that mark an Australian spring.
From garden to plate
It’s a shift that rewards a slower visit. Wander through the one million blooms and you’ll find corners grown for tasting as much as looking. New for 2026, The Garden House by Bunnings Warehouse becomes a dedicated home for the festival’s food program, with grazing box workshops, matcha masterclasses and floral-inspired high teas running alongside cooking demonstrations throughout the month.
There’s real depth here too: a First Nations food experience with chef Adam Shipp explores native ingredients and their stories through tasting and conversation, while market stalls stacked with seasonal produce and guided tours trace the throughline from garden bed to dinner plate. Lay out a picnic rug, meet the local producers, and let an afternoon among the blooms unfold at its own pace.
It’s also reason enough to make a weekend of it. For visitors travelling down from Sydney and regional NSW, Floriade’s 30-day run gives plenty of room to build a proper spring itinerary around it – a long lunch at Historic Lanyon Homestead, Floriade’s satellite site, or a Sunday spent at Dogs’ Day Out on the festival’s final day, furry friend in tow.
Night blooms
When the sun goes down, Floriade shows its other side. NightFest, Floriade’s Darkside, returns for four nights only – Thursday 1 October to Sunday 4 October – with Commonwealth Park transformed by lights, entertainment and flowers: illuminated gardens, fire performances and roving entertainment set the scene after dark. This year’s line-up is the strongest in NightFest’s history, featuring headline performances from The Temper Trap, Tim Finn, Pacific Avenue, Busby Marou and Christine Anu across four nights on Stage 88. Add a spread of after-dark food and drink stalls and NightFest starts to feel less like a garden festival, and more like a full night out that happens to be set among a million illuminated blooms.
Whichever version of Floriade you come for – the daytime feast of colour and produce, or NightFest’s after-dark spectacle – the invitation is the same: come hungry for colour, leave full of inspiration.
